Flood: Environmentalist cautions Lagos residents against reckless dumping of waste

An environmentalist, and National President, Nigeria Environmental Society (NES) Dr Dorathy Bassey, on Wednesday cautioned Lagos residents against reckless dumping of waste on the streets, as it could increase flooding.

Bassey spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos ahead of the Global Recycling Day to arouse public consciousness on waste recycling and management to improve human habitat.

‘Not banning generator imports will hurt renewable energy policy’

Dr. Dorothy Bassey is the president of, Nigerian Environmental Society (NES). She spoke with VICTOR GBONEGUN on depletion of the ecosystem, the menace of plastic pollution, and the Ogoni cleanup exercise.

Environmental activists have expressed worries over the increase in depletion of the earth’s ecosystem and resources. What actions are needed to promote and enhance conservation?
The depletion of the earth’s ecosystem is a global challenge that must be tackled with a national strategy. Ecosystem inventory and tracking is the first step. I personally believe that policies that can safeguard our ecosystem must be based on data and not arbitrary because it is trending. Environmental degradation comprises air, soil, and water pollution, wildlife destruction, forestry management, and natural resources that are unsustainably extracted.

NES VISITS NCDC; APPLAUDS HEALTH CARE WORKERS

The Nigerian Environmental Society, NES as part of her outreach programme, visited the National Centre for Disease and Control (NCDC), Lagos office to appreciate the level of works being carried out in combating the Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

The NES team headed by her National President, Dr. Dorothy Bassey (FNES), applauded the efforts of the frontline staff and most especially the health care workers across the country for their unrelenting efforts to treat and care for the sick.

Minister of State, Petroleum Resources Calls for a Balance between Environment, Economy and Equity in Addressing Environmental Issues.

Speaking at the 29th Annual Conference of Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) in Benin, Edo state, His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva noted that Nigeria as a nation faces an array of environmental tests which boils down to the fundamental challenge of making enlightened decisions that will place people and the planet on course for a better future.

The Honourable Minister also noted that Nigeria as a nation is faced with the daunting challenge of curtailing negative environmental impacts, including climate change impacts and therefore advocate for a holistic and pragmatic approach to the environment issues.

NES Appeal for Support for the Passage of NIEP Bill as Prof. Lawrence I.N Ezemonye takes a bow from NES Leadership

The Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) at its 29th Annual Conference/AGM request for support from all well-meaning stakeholders to ensure that the Bill for an Act to establish the Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria (NIEP) is passed into law in the 9th Assembly.

The Bill which was successfully passed in both Chambers during the 8th Assembly and transmitted for Presidential Assent was never declined but lapsed due to time.

The Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) at her 29th Annual General Meeting held in Edo State on 16th November 2019, elected new national officers into her National Executive Council, with former Vice President1, Dr. Dorothy Bassey (FNES) emerging as the new and first female National President of Nigeria’s foremost environmental body.
